Our Preparatory Course (Prep Course) is a stepping stone to HCIS. Its main purpose is to train students in the English language so they are ready for the IGCSE and IBDP challenges at HCIS.

The Course
The students go through 20 weeks of an intensive training course wherein they develop their listening, speaking, reading and writing skills.

Examinations
They have to sit for a mid-term and an end of course examination. The mid-term exam is a good indicator of their progress, while the final test at the end of the course is decisive for promotion to further studies in HCIS.

Co-Curricular Activities (CCAs)
The students also participate in the School’s CCAs and are given the opportunity to pursue the sport/activity of their choice. This helps them bond with the students that they may soon be joining at HCIS.

Course Outcome
Students who meet the criteria set by HCIS (i.e. a pass in both English and Mathematics) in the end-of-course assessment will be guaranteed a place in HCIS. Students will be placed at the academic level equivalent to his/her age group, subject to the professional advice of the respective teachers.

All English and Mathematics teachers are qualified and experienced

1. Participants will:

- Be immersed in an English-speaking environment.
- Adhere to a daily routine, taking part in school events and activities.
- Be able to use HCIS school facilities such as Media resource centre, IT lab, internet, sports facilities, etc.

2. Learning will be through student-centred activities.

3. Pastoral care and character development education.

English
Mastering the following linguistic skills:

• Listening
• Reading comprehension
• Speaking
• Writing

Various resources, like text books, CDs, online activities, educational and word-building games, are used for the learning of the English language. Equal emphasis is placed on listening, speaking, reading and writing.

The teachers share a good rapport with the students and indeed even after the students have been promoted to HCIS, they often come back to thank them.

Mathematics
Other than English the students are also kept up to speed with Mathematics. There are regular Mathematics classes and we ensure the students do not fall back on this important subject.

Music
Music is used as a tool to teach both the School's song, Singapore’s National Anthem and English songs that help the students develop their English language skills.
